    1. Apply for Excellence in County Government Award

The ACCA Annual Convention is coming up in just two short months. One of the highlights of the convention every year is honoring one large and small county with the Excellence in County Government Award. This award is reserved for those counties who have solved a problem with an innovative solution, improving the lives of their county citizens. This prestigious award embodies what it means to serve county government. The recipients of this award will not only be recognized at the annual convention, but they will also receive extensive media recognition following the convention. If your county has implemented a program that should be recognized with the Excellence in County Government Award, please submit this form to Jeannie Gaines by June 30th.

    2. Two ACCA Members Appointed to Legislative Task Forces

David Money, Probate Judge and Chairman of the Henry County Commission, and Randy Cole, Shelby County Engineer, have both been appointed to legislative task forces that will work to improve the quality of life for citizens across the state. Judge Money was appointed to the Juvenile Justice Task Force, who held their first meeting with Governor Ivey this week. Alabama counties will spend $26 million on juvenile housing, transportation, and medical care this year, and this task force will conduct an examination of the state’s juvenile justice system to develop recommendations for the 2018 Legislative Session. Randy Cole was appointed to the Alabama Commission on Railway Safety that will conduct a review of the current railroad safety laws, regulations, and procedures to then recommend improvements that include innovative technology and enhanced safety standards. Congratulations to both gentlemen!

    3. Joint Bid Update

It’s that time of year again when the Association staff starts preparing for the County Joint Bid Program. This year the Association is planning to expand the program to include even more, so if your county is interested in adding any items, please contact Chase Cobb. Association staff extends their gratitude to the County Engineers who have volunteered to serve on this year’s Joint Bid Committee. It will be the duty of the committee to carefully review the bid specifications and make recommendations on specs to be modified, added, or removed. In addition, the committee will review the bids following the bid opening to determine the lowest responsible bidder. If you have any questions about this year’s Joint Bid list or committee, please contact Chase Cobb.

    4. Contact ALEA Marine Patrol for Boating Registration Information

As of January 2015, the ALEA Marine Patrol, formerly known as the DCNR Marine Police Division, is the correct point-of-contact for boating registration information. As boating season in Alabama is now in full swing, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has experienced an influx of calls regarding boating registration. If your county office receives questions about boating registration, please refer them to the Marine Patrol Headquarters at 1-800-272-7930, or callers can reach Boat Registration directly at 334-517-2930.

    5. June is National Safety Month

What has your county been doing this month to keep your employees safe? National Safety Month, observed annually in June, is intended to focus on reducing the leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities.
