    Friday is the deadline to cast votes in the election for the Local Government Health Insurance Board, the new governing board for the health insurance program that most counties offer to employees. Don’t you want as many county voices as possible on the board that will make big decisions about your healthcare coverage? Please encourage everyone in your department to vote. You must have your paper ballot to vote – even if you want to vote online. If anyone has not voted and cannot locate their paper ballot, they should call the State Employees’ Insurance

    Alabama prisons most overcrowded in U.S.

    County jails already take a huge bite out of the budget every year, and that’s with a state corrections system that is the most overcrowded in the nation, according to With state leaders looking to make big changes, counties officials must stand together to make sure the solution at the state level doesn’t create new problems at the county level.     Register now for regional insurance fund training

    Counties that are working to complete the Safety Incentive Discount Program should be aware that free registration for the Safety Coordinator training and the Public Officials/Administrative Staff training is now open. To qualify for the Safety Incentive Discount, the county safety coordinator of record must attend the Safety Coordinator Training.  Additionally, the county should send at least one representative who has the authority to hire, discipline and terminate employees to the Public Officials/Administrative Staff Training in October. Additional details about dates and locations are available online.     Environmental permits for “dirt pits”

    New permit requirements for small mining operations went into effect in early 2013, and these new requirements apply to county-operated “dirt pits” that are a necessary part of a road and bridge department. One of ADEM’s top regulators participated in a webinar with county engineers last week to review the permit and some common trouble spots, and his presentation offers some useful guidance.
