  • Alabama Congressional Breakfast at NACo

If you are attending the NACo Legislative Conference, please register for the Alabama Congressional Breakfast, scheduled for February 24 at 8 a.m. in SR-485 of the Senate Russell Building. All members of Alabama’s Congressional Delegation have been invited, so it is very important that we have a good representation of county officials from each district. You can register online any time before Feb. 13, and the cost is $25 per person. NOTE:If you were registered for last year’s breakfast, which was cancelled due to severe weather, then do not register for this year’s breakfast online. Instead, register through Marcia Collier at mcollier@alabamacounties.org.

    Leadership Initiative Begins

Almost 20 county commissioners, now entering their second term in office, will begin an 18-month leadership journey Thursday with the kickoff meeting of the Association’s new leadership program, the Practical Leadership Action Network (PLAN). Commissioners from 16 counties are participating in the program that concludes in August of 2016. The program includes partnering with the Association’s affiliate organizations, insurance boards and the ACCA leadership, a fall retreat, site visits to counties and lobbying events in Montgomery and Washington. Congratulations and good luck to the members of PLAN 2016!

ACCA District Meetings Begin Next Week

One of the best ways county leaders can prepare to effectively influence the legislative process in 2015 is to attend one of the 6 ACCA District Meetings. The first one is next week in Elmore County, which is designed to be especially convenient for commissioners who are taking the Alabama Local Government Training Institute courses next week. And there are 5 other dates and locations around the state – Jan. 26, Cullman County; Jan. 27, Talladega County; Feb. 3, Marengo County; Feb. 5, Conecuh County; and Feb. 9, Dale County. Visit alabamacounties.org to register.

    President in D.C.

ACCA President Merceria Ludgood joined Sonny Brasfield in Washington, D.C., last week at the annual meeting of all presidents and executive directors of the state associations of counties. The event included a briefing at the White House, leadership sessions and the opportunity to network with presidents from throughout the country.

Registration Deadline is Wednesday for Personnel Administration Course

County staff leaders have big responsibilities to manage county personnel, and the County Government Education Institute offers a custom-tailored course covering federal and state employment laws and best practices in the areas of discipline, termination, unemployment compensation, drug testing and workers’ compensation. The class is offered Jan. 28-29 in Prattville, and Wednesday is the last day to register. Please note in the registration process that there is a new option in 2015 to receive course materials electronically instead of in a three-ring binder.
