  • Never Stronger Than Alabama’s Weakest County

The impact of “67 counties, ONE voice” cannot be separated from efforts at the local level, and 19 newly re-elected second-term commissioners started their journey last week to enhance their leadership and expertise in county government by participating in PLAN, the Practical Leadership Action Network. For the next year and a half, they will visit outstanding local government operations, gain hands-on experience advocating for counties at the state and federal level and learn about ACCA and its affiliate organizations. As ACCA President Merceria Ludgood said, “Each commissioner is to be commended for investing the time and energy that this program will demand. We are extremely proud of this group.” A list of the inaugural PLAN participants can be found online.

    New Training for Jail Officers

There about two weeks left to register county jail officers for the first class from the Alabama Jail Training Academy. The course, “Officer Responsibilities & Offender Supervision,” is specifically designed for the legal environment in Alabama, and it will be taught by veteran county jail officers. Counties that are members of ACCA’s Self-Insurance Funds can receive reimbursement for registration if the officer completes the AJTA certification promptly. The class is Feb. 18-19 in Prattville, and you can register and get details online.

Update From the Examiners of Public Accounts

The top item on the agenda for tomorrow’s County Chat with ACAA webinar is the memo to counties from Chief Examiner Ron Jones related to the chart of accounts specified in the County Finance Manual. This will be a great opportunity to pose any questions you may have on this important topic. The session is 10:30-11 a.m., and you can register now at the ACCA events calendar.

2015 ACCA Membership Directories Released This Week

Thursday of this week marks the beginning of ACCA’s District Meetings, with the first one set for Elmore County. That also means that counties will begin receiving their 2015 ACCA Membership Directories at the district meetings. Each county will receive the usual number of hard copies this year, and counties will also receive a USB drive containing the PDF version that can be shared throughout the courthouse. Many thanks to everyone who helped with the directory this year!

Note: The ACCA office will be closed Jan. 19 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
