Each county received a bundle of ACCA’s 2013 wall calendars at the Legislative conference last week. If you did not attend the conference, please be sure you received package and that the calendars are distributed to commissioners and key county staff members. The package also contained a flash drive with a full PDF version of the latest edition of the Handbook for Alabama County Commissioners.

    Register for district meetings
Before the holidays get any busier, check out this district meeting schedule to find the time and place that will work best for you. The meetings start Jan. 14, and new commissioners who are taking the ALGTI class on Media Relations and the Open Meetings Law may want to sign up for the Elmore County meeting. That district meeting, scheduled for Jan. 24, is in conjunction with the class.

    Counting on an insurance discount?
For members of the ACCA Self-Insurance Funds, time is running out to complete the Safety Incentive Discount Program. Safety verification forms – signed by the chairman – showing that your county has completed all 9 program requirements are due to ACCA no later than Dec. 30. Questions? Contact Henry van Arcken.

    Moving forward on constitutional changes
Alabama’s Constitutional Revision Commission could vote Friday on ACCA’s recommendations to strengthen local decision-making, and the Montgomery Advertiser quoted Mary Pons on the issues this weekend. If the proposals advance through the commission, they could be in play during the 2013 legislative session.

Alabama makes impact at NACo board meeting
The NACo Board of Directors met last week in Tennessee, and Alabama was well represented by longtime board member Stan Batemon of St. Clair County and new board member Rhondel Rhone of Clarke County. In addition to his board duties, Batemon was also busy campaigning for second vice president of NACo. You can visit his campaign website to send him a message of support.
