  • Department of Revenue deadline Thursday
All counties that collect or contract for the collection of local sales taxes must respond to a survey from the Alabama Department of Revenue by Dec. 20.  The survey is part of the transition to the so-called “ONE SPOT” sales tax collection system beginning Oct. 1, 2013.

     No Christmas bonuses
In nearly every case, it is impossible for counties to give employees a holiday bonus or “one-time salary adjustment.” Questions about this pop up every year about this time, and last year Mary Pons gave a detailed explanation of the legal barriers to bonuses.

Less than a month left on RAMP
Counties that want to opt into RAMP (Rural Assistance Match Program) in conjunction with ATRIP have less than a month left to notify ALDOT of their decision in writing. The deadline is Jan. 9.

Just a few joint bid shopping days left
If you are planning to buy heavy equipment, herbicides or roads signs through ACCA’s Joint Bid Program, there are just a few shopping days left at 2012 prices. New prices will go into effect Jan. 1.

Open meetings and media relations for commissioners
There’s an Alabama Local Government Training Institute class next month on Media Relations and the Open Meetings Law. Use the link to register or view the draft agenda. For new commissioners, the class will be a valuable chance to immerse yourselves in meeting fundamentals (proper notice, rules of order, voting and recordkeeping, just to name a few). Veteran commissioners may find it a welcome refresher.
