  • Redistricting deadlines approach
The deadline to complete redistricting before the 2014 elections is just five months away. This applies to counties that: 1) have not redrawn districts since the 2010 census, and 2) want to use revised district lines for the 2014 election cycle. Mary Pons has prepared “Redistricting the County Commission” to advise you about the process in light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court Ruling that struck down requirements for preclearance.

Legal threat to county jails regarding prisoner mail
Prison Legal News (PLN), a magazine and website that advocates for prisoner rights and especially mail rights, is suing jails and jail officials around the country over delivery of PLN materials. Sheriffs and jail administrators should use the Alabama Legal-based Jail Guidelines, which are provided to member counties, to make sure that their policy and procedures on inmate mail are in line with current law and are being implemented appropriately. ACCA has developed a form letter for denied mail that can be adapted for use in your county, and the letter is available on the resources page for Jails & Law Enforcement. Questions? Contact John Hamm.

Human resources training for personnel staff
The Alabama Chapter of the Association of Public Personnel Administrators has a reputation for providing outstanding training that can be helpful to officials who handle these duties for their counties. The organization’s annual conference is scheduled for Aug. 5-7 in Orange Beach, and early bird registration ends soon.

    Counting down to NACo conference
Check out this latest NACo South Region Update for details of regional meetings in Fort Worth. Alabama will want to be well-represented at the regional meeting to make sure Stan Batemon gets a warm welcome when he stops by to give his campaign stump speech.

    ACCA emails
ACCA is transitioning to a new method of sending mass emails, so you may notice a different look to things during this process. Please advise Donna Key if you have any feedback, since it is important for the new system to serve ACCA members well.
