During the last legislative session, many county commissioners – especially those who took office in 2012 – told ACCA that they wanted to know more about the legislative process. In response, ACCA scheduled a class just for you – Legislative & Governmental Relations, Dec. 3-4 in Birmingham. The class is coordinated with the ACCA Legislative Conference, so you can do both in one trip. Want to know more? Use this link for details and registration

Coffees @ the Courthouse in full swing
There will be many important conversations this week as county and legislative leaders gather for Coffee @ the Courthouse in nine different counties, from Madison to Clarke. Your work in these events will lay a firm foundation for the upcoming session of the Alabama Legislature. Many thanks to Crenshaw, Etowah and St.Clair counties for getting these events kicked off last week.

    Attn: County safety coordinators
The deadline for members of only the ACCA Workers Compensation Self-Insurers Fund to return their Safety Incentive Discount Program (SIDP) Verification Form has been extended to Friday.  It is very important that you do not miss this new deadline!  As for members of the ACCA Liability Self-Insurance Fund or both funds, the SIDP Verification Form needs to be returned no later than Dec 31. All members should include the following documentation with their form: 1) copy of the Safety Coordinator Appointment resolution or commission minutes; 2) copies of each required policy; 3) copies of AJA training certificates; and any other documentation that you feel may be useful in verifying your completion of the nine (9) SIDP requirements.  If you have any questions, please contact Henry van Arcken, ACCA director of insurance services, at 334-263-7594 or hvanarcken@alabamacounties.org.

    Jail guidelines training in Alabama
Next week, the National Sheriff’s Association is providing two day-long training opportunities for counties implementing the Legal-Based Jail Guidelines, which are designed to reduce lawsuits against jails and to put counties in a better position to win when suits are filed. The training will be Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Montgomery and Thursday, Nov. 21, in Huntsville. Download this flyer for details.
