  • Election time
The statewide special election on the proposed constitutional amendment allowing the withdrawal of $437 million from the Alabama Trust Fund is scheduled for next Tuesday The ACCA Board of Directors elected to take no active position on the amendment. However, you can read the ACCA staff overview of the amendment.

    Minority Issues Steering Committee
Both ACCA President Ricky Harcrow and Minority Director Ron Smith have made their appointments to the ACCA Minority Issues Steering Committee. The group will meet later this fall as part of the development of the 2013 ACCA Legislative Program.

    Logging meeting
The Association is coordinating a meeting later this month with those counties planning to implement the new notice requirements established in a 2012 act supported by interest groups representing the forestry industry. Counties planning to attend need to remember to RSVP. For more information, contact Sallie Gowan.

    Budget time
Hope it’s on a commission agenda sometime this month to approve your county’s 2012-2013 budget. The new fiscal year is just three weeks away, and state law requires counties to have a new budget in place by Oct. 1.

Beware of risks of using inmate labor
Counties using inmate labor should be aware of the increased risks of injury and the possible additional costs, including medical care for inmates injured.  Because the inmates are not “employees” of the county, they are not eligible for workers’ compensation medical coverage. For more information, read the Meadowbrook Loss Control Bulletin on this subject.
