What is …?

Self-Gov is shorthand for the Alabama Limited Self-Governance Act. It’s a 2005 law that created a process for voters to decide if their county commission should have access to additional health and safety powers. If voters in unincorporated areas say OK, the county commission can address one or more of the following issues:

  • Weeds
  • Junkyards
  • Litter and rubbish
  • Noise
  • Pollution
  • Unsanitary sewage
  • Animal control

A total of 18 counties have access to these additional health and safety powers today. The general election on Nov. 4, 2014, is the next opportunity for voters to decide this question. A referendum on this issue can be called in two ways:

  • By resolution of the county commission
  • By citizens’ petition
