This Week’s Top 5 Things You Need to Know

    1. 6 Weeks ‘til the Session

Tomorrow will mark exactly 6 weeks until the Alabama Legislature is gaveled back into session. Counties are encouraged to be mindful of advertising deadlines for local legislation. If preparations such as identifying a sponsor and/or drafting the bill are not already well underway, there is little time to spare.

    2. Legislature’s Joint Transportation Committee Sets Regional Meetings in January  >>> LOCATIONS UPDATED

County leaders are encouraged to mark their calendars now for the Joint Transportation Committee’s regional meetings during January. The focus will be on the gas tax as an option to provide sufficient resources for Alabama’s road and bridge infrastructure. The meetings are a significant opportunity for counties to share the real-life impacts of crumbling infrastructure and current funding. All meetings will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon. Exact meeting locations will be announced soon, and ACCA will keep you informed as additional information becomes available.

    January 7: Northport

    January 19: Hoover

    January 21: Huntsville

    January 26: Mobile

    January 28: Dothan

The announcement of these meetings has already received considerable media coverage, and a few links are provided below. The online comments from readers can be an informative – though not precise – indicator of public sentiment.

    3. Home Depot Rebate Deadline is 12/31

Through the U.S. Communities program, there’s a little time left if you want to maximize your county’s rebate for Home Depot purchases this year. There are a few steps you can take no later than December 31 to make sure that all eligible purchases  – going back to Jan. 1 – count toward the end-of-year rebate.

    4. PALS Spring Litter Pickup: April 16-23, 2016

AL PALS (People Against a Littered State) announces the annual “Don’t Drop it on Alabama” Spring litter pickup will be held the week of April 16-23, 2016.  In 2015 we had 61 Counties involved!!  In 2016, we are hoping for all 67 Counties to become involved in keeping Alabama “free of litter.”  Counties may contact Spencer Ryan, Executive Vice President for AL PALS at (334) 263-7737 or Jeannine Wilder, AL PALS Chapter Development Coordinator at (256) 571-9968 to order supplies for the annual cleanup.

    5. Double Up: Legislative Relations Courses Coincide with District Meeting

Whether you are a county official or county employee, you will want to make sure your legislative and governmental relations skills are razor sharp for the 2016 session. There is a special opportunity the last week of January for professional development in this important area – and it falls within a week of the session’s first day. The Alabama Local Government Training Institute and County Government Education Institute are offering a joint class January 27-28, so you can earn credit in these certification programs. The class, which will be held in Prattville, also coincides with the final ACCA District Meeting, and the schedule is designed so you can do both.
