    + Key Dates This Week

    1. Brush up on your legislative knowledge ahead of Regular Session; Register for Feb. 20-21 CGEI course

The start of the 2019 Legislative Session is nearly 5 weeks away, so now is the perfect time to make plans to brush up on your legislative knowledge by joining us in Prattville on Feb. 20-21 for the County Government Education Institute’s (CGEI) Legislative & Governmental Relations course. The course is open to elected officials and staff and will provide participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to understand and engage in the state legislative process, advocate for important issues to county government and develop positive relationships with legislators. View a draft course agenda here, and register for the course before the Feb. 6 deadline here.

    2. REMINDER: Tell us who you know on Goat Hill

Do you have a special relationship with a member — or several members — of the Alabama Legislature? Let the ACCA staff know by filling out this brief survey. Your special relationship(s) could be the difference between a legislative win or loss during the 2019 Legislative Session.

    3. Five weeks remain to square away local bills

Tomorrow marks 5 weeks until the Alabama Legislature is gaveled back into session. County leaders are encouraged to be mindful of advertising deadlines for local legislation. If preparations are not already well underway, such as identifying a sponsor and/or drafting the bill, there is little time to spare.

    4. ACCA Liability Fund welcomes new member

The ACCA Liability Self-Insurance Fund is proud to welcome its newest member to the Fund — the Clarke County Commission. Clarke County joins 58 other Alabama counties that receive liability coverage through the Fund, which was established in 1986 and has grown to more than $10 million in annual premiums for a total of 72 covered entities. To learn more about the benefits of the Liability Fund and how your county can become a member, contact ACCA’s Director of Insurance Services, Henry van Arcken, at or (334) 394-3232.

    5. Engineers asked to participate in “road sign” campaign promoting NACE 2020 in Alabama

Attention, County Engineers! The ACEA will be playing host to the NACE 2020 Conference in beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama, which means we need your help in promoting our great state. NACE 2020 “road signs” have been created as part of a promotional campaign to showcase our state’s unique and beautiful landmarks. County engineers are encouraged to work with their surrounding counties to receive their area’s designated NACE 2020 road sign, take a photo of the sign in front of a county landmark, pass the sign along to a neighboring county and then email their photo by Feb. 28 to Jeannie Gaines, Public Relations Manager.
