    1. Governor’s Prison Reform Task Force conducts first meeting

Gov. Kay Ivey’s newly established prison reform task force held its first meeting last week. The task force — which does not include representation from ACCA or the Sheriffs Association — is composed of six legislators and prison system representatives, the Attorney General and the State Finance Director. The initial meeting focused on organizational issues and a report from the State of Alabama’s legal representation in the lawsuit related to inmate treatment. Interestingly, the attorney representing the State told the committee that Alabama’s prison system is not overcrowded and that no plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit are seeking a reduction in the number of state inmates being house by the Department of Corrections. Members of the task force will provide a prison reform update to county officials at the ACCA 91st Convention in August.

The cost to participate is $45 per person and will cover lunch and green fees. All county leaders are invited to attend and, if interested and willing, to register for the Tournament here. These rates, as well as any insurance refunds and the possibility of a longevity bonus for Liability Fund participants, will be discussed during the Funds’ Annual Membership Meeting in August. Each county is urged to attend this meeting, which will be held Tuesday, August 20, from 2-3 p.m. in conjunction with the 91st Convention in Orange Beach. The meeting will also include details on the rate-setting process and the Funds’ financial status.
