Remarks from ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield

We’re closing in on 30 months of operation by County Risk Services (CRS), the member-managed entity that now provides claims management, underwriting and risk management for Alabama counties’ growing insurance programs. It’s remarkable to think about the changes these programs have undergone in such a short time — and the goals that lie ahead of us. We’re grateful for your confidence, and we’re proud of the level of service, financial strength and growing value that CRS is providing to all counties.

This week’s need-to-know information from ACCA

ACCA priority bill providing relief to county jails becomes law

HB110 by Rep. Jim Hill and Sen. Greg Albritton is now the sixth ACCA priority bill to become law during the current Legislative Session. Once fully effective on Jan. 1, 2022, Act 2021-249 will help alleviate a number of unintended burdens placed on counties and their jails through the “dips and dunks” process established in 2015. Specifically, the new law will provide overcrowded jails with direct relief from holding the State’s “dunk” inmates, provide reimbursement to counties that choose to house “dunks,” expand housing services by the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, and make the transfer of inmates to State custody more efficient. “First Mondays” virtual event to take place May 3

ACCA’s “First Mondays” initiative will return next week to provide county leaders with the information they need to know regarding the latest issues at the federal, state and local levels of government. Scheduled for May 3 at 3 p.m., the virtual event will feature discussions on nationwide infrastructure, fraudulent unemployment claims and summer plans for reuniting the County Family. It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) — which is held every spring to highlight the grave importance of safe, attentive driving and working in highway work zones. This year’s theme is “Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.” and from April 26-30, Alabama counties are encouraged to get involved and help spread the word about work zone safety to both county employees and residents.
