It was quite the “Odyssey” in 2023 — much was accomplished together, and we are poised for a new journey. Well done, Jay!

    ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

    This week’s need-to-know information from ACCA

    Counties approve, welcome new Association leaders

    Alabama’s counties have completed another successful year, and we’re honored to announce that Commissioner Joe Knight of Jefferson County will lead us through the next 12 months. 

    Commissioner Knight was unanimously approved during the Association’s 95th Convention to serve as the 2023-2024 ACCA President. Joining President Knight in leading ACCA through the coming year’s Odyssey are President-Elect and Calhoun County Commissioner Lee Patterson; Vice President and Macon County Commissioner Miles Robinson; and Minority Director and Clarke County Commissioner Tyrone Moye. 

    Also stepping into a new role this year is Immediate Past President and Autauga County Commission Chairman Jay Thompson, who will now serve as Chairman of the ACCA Legislative Committee. Congratulations to each of our new Association leaders, and thank you for your continued service and commitment to all 67 counties!

    ACCA recognizes counties, county leaders for extraordinary achievements

    This past week, the County Family celebrated the hard-earned achievements of county officials and employees while also recognizing the impressive initiatives of individual counties.

    The Association’s awards for Efficiency and Innovation in County Government were provided to the following: 

    • Urban – Limestone County, “Solid Waste Department Development”
    • Rural – Chambers County, “Community Health and Wellness Center Initiative”

    The Association also presented a new “ONE Family Award” to individuals and entities whose efforts over the past year extended well beyond their own county lines and truly embodied the County Family spirit. The Association’s inaugural winners of the “ONE Family Award” were:

    • Association of County Engineers of Alabama
    • Jefferson County Commission | Jefferson County Roads and Transportation Department
    • Audra Smith, Deputy Administrator/Treasurer, Autauga County

    Two counties recognized for insurance leadership

    The ACCA Liability Self-Insurance Fund (LSIF) annually recognizes participating counties and county-related entities that have successfully improved the overall management of liability exposures over the past three years. Please join us in congratulating this year’s winners of an LSIF leadership award:

    • 1st Place – Covington County
    • 2nd Place – Barbour County

    The winners were announced at last week’s ACCA 95th Convention. The first-place recipient was awarded a check for $2,000 from the LSIF and an award from County Risk Services. An LSIF check for $1,500 was presented to the second-place recipient.

    32nd Annual Golf Bash tees off September 20

    Calling all County Golfers! The 32nd Annual County Golf Bash is nearly three weeks away! Scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, at the Timberline Golf Club in Calera, the Golf Bash annually provides county leaders, vendors and Association staff with an opportunity to gather together for an enjoyable afternoon of networking on the links.     Get involved in National Preparedness Month

    September is National Preparedness Month, and the upcoming peak of hurricane season reminds us of the importance of preparing ourselves, our families and our communities for potential disasters and emergencies. Each week in September will be dedicated to emphasizing a critical task in preparing your disaster/emergency plans. Counties are encouraged to participate in National Preparedness Month by utilizing and sharing the information, graphics and interactive media found here.
