Monday Memo | June 7

Remarks from ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield

Almost every day, the phone rings from a county facing unreasonable challenges generated by state inmates sitting in their county jail. When it was announced that the State missed the mark with its plans to build private prisons, I wondered if those forging another new plan would finally include county government in the search for a productive and workable solution. How can we be excluded from the conversation? After all, we’re already providing the State with a mega-prison in the form of 67 jails bulging at the seams with inmates that the State refuses to accept.
