Remarks from ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield
The Association’s Board of Directors meets this morning in Montgomery, and Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver will attend his last meeting as a member of the Board. He’s represented county government’s best interests on this Board for almost three decades — speaking with ONE Voice, using his political influence and providing selfless leadership that has benefited all 67 counties. Saying “thank you” is not nearly enough, but I’m saying it anyway.
This week’s need-to-know information from ACCA
On Election Day, the County Family’s voice was heard loud and clear once again as hard work across all 67 counties culminated in the adoption of two priority amendments to the Alabama Constitution. The amendments now move to the Governor’s desk for her confirmation of ratification.
Once in effect, Amendment 2 on the ballot will give the state and local governments the authority to financially partner with internet service providers to expand residents’ access to broadband infrastructure; Amendment 7 will clarify that local governments with separate constitutional amendments may use those measures, along with the powers afforded under Amendment 772 of the State Constitution, to provide a “thing of value” when pursuing economic development projects at the local level.
The Association staff will keep counties posted on the forthcoming effective date of Amendments 2 and 7.
Class dates and registration links for the 2023 county educational programs are now available on the ACCA County Family online community. The 2023 education schedule features classes for commissioners through the Alabama Local Government Training Institute, as well as classes for county employees through the County Government Education Institute. To learn more about the 2023 schedule and to register for any courses, simply navigate to the “Events/Education” tab located under your county group’s section of the online community. For questions or assistance related to the online community, please contact ACCA Director of Communication and Engagement Abby Fitzpatrick.
The November 16 webinar for County Administrators has been officially cancelled in light of the statewide swearing in of new commissioners set to take place on the same date. Instead, ACAA members will receive a podcast at the webinar’s previously scheduled time of 10:30 a.m. this Wednesday.
Administrative leaders are encouraged to monitor their email on November 16 and to contact ACCA’s Director of Affiliate and Government Relations, Lauren Hodge, with any questions.
