Monday Memo | October 31

Remarks from ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield

A day before I was officially on the payroll, I walked in the door of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama. It was a Monday, exactly 12,410 days ago on October 31, 1988. I didn’t arrive until about 8:30 a.m., and Buddy Sharpless, the executive director at the time, quickly expressed that he’d wondered if I had forgotten to show up for my new job. As I celebrate 34 years with the Association, I can’t help but be so very glad he overlooked that first transgression and gave me a second chance!

This week’s need-to-know information from ACCA

Overflow hotel accommodations now available for December ACCA Legislative Conference

Have you secured your room reservation for this year’s ACCA Legislative Conference on December 7-8? Hotel rooms are sold out at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery — this year’s Conference location — but County Family members still in need of overnight accommodations can now reserve a discounted room at the nearby Springhill Suites.

Each year, the ACCA Legislative Conference provides time for the membership to hear from policy leaders across the state, discuss anticipated legislative issues in the year ahead and address important business together. County Family members are encouraged to register today for the Legislative Conference if they have yet to do so. And as always, please contact ACCA’s Events and Education Team with any questions.

ACCA Insurance Boards to meet this week in Montgomery

This week, the two boards overseeing the ACCA Self-Funded Insurance programs will meet at the ACCA Headquarters to elect board members to three-year terms, review investment activities, and discuss state and national policies impacting insurance coverage. Board members will also hear pertinent updates regarding ongoing projects dedicated to enhancing member benefits.

Statewide Recycling Grants Workshop taking place November 16

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the Alabama Recycling Coalition will be conducting a Recycling Grants Workshop in Pelham on November 16, and interested County Family members are invited to participate. The workshop will take place at the Pelham Civic Center and will detail opportunities for funding dedicated to enabling the growth of recycling in Alabama. County Family members can click here for more information on the workshop, as well as the opportunity to R.S.V.P.
