County Advocacy Days continue on April 9, 23, and 30. We have several counties who have not yet attended or registered for these vitally important legislative opportunities. This week, lawmakers are scheduled to take up legislation on issues involving local property tax revenue and SSUT funding. It’s never been a more important time to have every county represented. Each County Advocacy Day begins with a legislative briefing by ACCA staff and includes lunch, then an afternoon spent at the state house as we promote county legislative priorities with ONE voice.

Last week ACCA and several legislative stakeholders hosted a press conference at the State House to promote a mental health bill that will improve access to mental health care in the state. State Sen. Will Barfoot and Rep. Russell Bedsole are sponsoring the legislation (SB 240 and HB 359), which has its roots in a year-long passion project of ACCA’s PLAN 2024 leadership group. The legislation’s goal is to keep people with mental illnesses out of jails and emergency rooms and help place them in facilities where they can receive treatment. The legislation would use opioid settlement money to fund treatment for people who are facing mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders; provide resources for mental health care in jails across the state; and give local judges support to help people with mental illnesses who come through their courts.

IAC will be collecting and uploading the latest documentation for obligations and expenditures through March 31, 2024. IAC will also be preparing updated project lists to send out for each county’s review for accuracy against its financial records.
